Handwashing has been common practice since the Roman times, yet throughout history its' benefits for the control of infection have been, and still remain, frequently overlooked. It was not until 1847 that hand washing was proved to be effective in preventing infection by Hungarian physician Dr Ignetz Senemmelweis. He found that 'child bed' (or puerperal) fever could be transmitted through poor hand hygiene, and that good handwashing practice amongst medical staff helped limit infection. #funfacts  #worldhygieneday #may5th #roadtoPPAIPY  #Gemintang40

Over 1.5 million children under five die each year as a result of diarrhea.  It is the second most common cause of child deaths worldwide.

Handwashing with soap at critical times - including before eating or preparing food and after using the toilet - can reduce diarrhoea rates by more than 40 per cent.

Handwashing with soap can reduce the incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARI’s) by around 23 per cent.

Pneumonia, is the number one cause of mortality among children under five years old, taking the lives of an estimated 1.8 million children per year.

Handwashing can be a critical measure in controlling pandemic outbreaks of respiratory infections. Several studies carried out during the 2006 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) suggest that washing hands more than 10 times a day can cut the spread of the respiratory virus by 55 per cent.

Handwashing with soap has been cited as one of the most cost-effective interventions to prevent diarrhoeal related deaths and disease. A review of several studies shows that handwashing in institutions such as primary schools and daycare centers reduce the incidence of diarrhoea by an average of 30 per cent.

Rates of handwashing around the world are low. Observed rates of handwashing with soap at critical moments – i.e, before handling food and after using the toilet - range from zero per cent to 34 per cent.

Ministry of Health has released a data on the low awareness of Indonesian people to wash their hands with soap. People's unwillingness to wash hands before doing five important activities is said to affect the spread of diarrhea. The ministry attached a great importance to raise people’s awareness through the Sanitasi Total Berbasis Masyarakat(Community-based Total Sanitation) program."Only 18.5 percent of Indonesians wash their hands before doing five important activities," said Director of Environmental Health of the Directorate General of Disease Control and Environmental Health of the Ministry of Health, Wilfred H. Purba at his office yesterday. The report is based on the Analysis Study of Environmental Health Risk, in 55 regencies and cities in 2013.Those five important activities are when cleansing children after defecating, defecating, before eating, feeding children and after cooking.A different fact, Wilfred said, was found when respondents were surveyed about their hand washing habit after defecating and before eating. "Each recorded high figures of 70.8 percent and 75.9 percent," he said. However, the figure declined when the respondents do other activities such as when cleansing children after defecating, before feeding children and before cooking, each with the percentage of 35.1 percent, 30.1 percent and 37.8 percent.Wilfred said low awareness of the people to wash their hands with soap in doing three other activities are caused by lack of campaigns.

Indonesia, the 2007 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) found that handwashing rates amongst women are very high, at 96 per cent. However the data does not identify the key times when women wash their hands (such as before food preparation) and does not distinguish between handwashing with or without soap. #funfacts  #worldhygieneday #may5th #roadtoPPAIPY  #Gemintang40
